Polycystic Kidney Disease |

PKD is a disease of the kidneys which is found in several
breeds, but principally in Persians and Exotics
It is caused by an autosomal dominant gene and can be detected by ultrasound scanning. With PKD, cysts form in the kidneys from birth but thay cannot be detected reliably before the age of 10 months, and then only by experienced sonographers using the more advanced scanners. PKD is progressive and incurable and eventually fatal. It only causes symptoms when in an advanced stage, which is typically reached between the ages of 3 years and 10 years.
